Ultimates Assemble!

Now that all the Ultimates cards have been revealed, it seems like it’s time to build a deck with them. There are quite a few different ways to go about this, but I thought a ‘flavorful’ good guy Ultimates build might be the best one to start with.

Thou Art a Winnar

The most important part of any deck is how you’re going to win, and Thor clearly fits this role with his ability to realistically bolt for twenty or more.

Thor seems too good not to play so we probably want to build our curve around him. So everything is sort of working backwards from that point. How to stay alive, how to make sure you can win, and what you need to do in case the poop hits the fan.

Recruiting Drive

Two Drops

I think Clint Barton Hawkeye, Ultimates goes A LONG way in making this deck viable. Such a powerful effect on such a low drop means we can play more copies of a lower drops then we would previously without too much worry of flooding towards the later turns.

We also have another powerful concealed character in the form of Bullseye – Lester. If we go for a controlling route this guy is going to be instrumental.

Since I like ten two drops, we need one more character Yelena Belova ♦ Black Widow – Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. * HYDRA seems great as she can make the board more controllable and gives you a concealed body to exhaust to Clint. Swordsman – Andreas von Strucker is fine too.

Substitute’s incidental synergy with Thor should not go unrecognized.

I do think however, that we may want to play Quicksilver just to bump our Ultimates count ever so slightly.

Three Drops

Mr. Fantastic, Ultimates seems head and shoulders better then any other Ultimates three drop.

Unfortunately he’s not SHIELD. On the other hand, SHIELD has access to Radioactive Man – Containment Suit who is no slouch – just ask Matt Robinson!

I think we also have to play Nick Fury too though. Ugh.

Four Drops

I think we definitely want a single copy of Giant Man so we can Liberation Day for him. Like with Nick Fury, not a big fan… but I like my search to cover all my spots.

Going outside of the Ultimates though, SHIELD has access to some absurdly powerful four drops in Iron Man – Mighty Avenger, Captain America – Champion License, and Daisy Johnson – Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., the former two especially with Radioactive Man – Containment Suit

I also think we want a single copy of Lady Deathstrike – Opportunistic Killer, who will let us spam Thor activations during the build.

Five Drops

Iron Man is offers you incredible disruption repeatedly against slower decks, while Sub-Mariner can net you enough life to stall to your later plays.

Outside of the Ultimates we have Wonder Man – Mighty Avenger and She-Hulk – Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D..

Your options are so good at this spot that it would be a shame if we didn’t toolbox.

(I realize playing Iron Man on four and five is kind of untasteful, but I think the strength of the characters makes up for it.)

Six Drop

Captain America is a beast making combat quite tough. I don’t think any of the other sixes hold a candle to him.

However, if we want to flip Triskellion early, we may want another six outside of the Captain.

Seven Drop

Thor is the only seven we have access to, but probably your best seven. I suppose you could play Clor if you were so inclined to…

Eight Drop

Despite Thor’s spectacular ability to end the game in one fell swoop, I actually think you want to play an eight drop.

In an aggressive match, recruiting Sub-Mariner also means giving your opponent some additional END which means you might have trouble closing in a timely fashion.

One slot to playing an eight drop doesn’t seem like a big concession, and accounts for your Thor getting locked out by Omnipotence.

Working backwords again, we probably need to play the Trinity – Omnipotence/Pathetic Attempt/Have a Blast!.

Following that we probably want access to the Triskellion along with Beyonder/Death, which form a pretty awesome combination. Savage Beatdown is too good not to play, and anything less than eight search effects seems to be terrible.

Putting that together:

Characters: 28
4x Clint Barton Hawkeye, Ultimates
4x Bullseye – Lester
2x Quicksilver, Ultimates
4x Radioactive Man – Containment Suit
2x Nick Fury, Ultimates
3x Iron Man – Mighty Avenger
1x Hank Pym Giant Man, Ultimates
1x Lady Deathstrike – Opportunistic Killer
2x Sub-Mariner, Ultimates
1x Iron Man, Ultimates
1x Wonder Man – Mighty Avenger
2x Captain America, Ultimates
2x Thor, Ultimates
1x Hulk, Ultimates
1x Death – The Second Force of the Universe
1x The Beyonder – Inhuman

Plot Twists: 22
4x Omnipotence
4x Mobilize
4x Liberation Day, Ultimates
4x Savage Beatdown
3x Pathetic Attempt
2x Have a Blast!
2x Now I’m Fighting Dirty – would probably toggle this, seems good with Triskellion
1x Death of the Dream

Locations: 8
4x Triskellion, Ultimates
4x Subterranea, Ultimates

Wow, this list actually seems kind of good/fun/not horrible. Good way to build a fun deck is how would sum it up.

In fact, I think it’s time to make a trip down to Collector’s Corner. (This leads into my Sunday musings from a few days ago.)

PS: Is Omni the new Fate Artifacts? Everything is playable when you can Omni their best card…

  1. Is there any place to look up the Ultimates cards? I couldn’t find them on DocX’s search engine.

  2. Try VSRealms, it sucks I know – I just discovered as I was trying to assemble this deck last night that Subbie doesn’t have the SHIELD affiliation.

  3. This has nothing to do with this article, it’s just something I knew you’d want to see: the best damn Halloween costumes ever made.
