Marquee Monday: Secret Society

Okay, I’ve had a long enough break! Time to start writing again! The blog will back to be updating daily Miguel style!

So… the next two Marquee events close to me in Northern California are this Saturday – at Stockton – and this Monday – at Games of Berkeley.

Originally, I really wanted to play the Crime Lords deck that abused Master Man, which I was tweaking in the previous weeks. This was up until I read on CarlosTheDwarf’s blog that Brian Eugenio also had a Master Man build.

Even if Brian doesn’t play the Master Man build, it’s fairly reasonable that other people from SJ might. Since I would prefer our local metagame be a bit more ‘diverse’, I’ve decided to play something else

I’ve been thinking about playing Avengers Control or a Doom deck that clones Puppet Masters. Both archetypes have their strengths and weakness. Particularly the Puppet Master deck; a field of four Puppet Masters and Doom is very hard to blitz through…until their play Omnipotence or the five drop Scarlet Witch – Wanda Maximoff.

What other awesomeness do we have available in mono team? How about:

Characters
1 Charaxes – Moth Monster
4 Deadshot – Floyd Lawton
4 Poison Ivy – Intoxicating
3 Wonder Woman – Ambassador of Peace
1 Black Manta – Underwater Marauder
1 Giganta – Rampaging
1 Deathstroke the Terminator – Killing Machine
1 Bizarro – Dark Mirror
1 Doomsday – Engine of Destruction
1 The Phantom Stranger – Wandering Hero
4 The Riddler – Riddle Me This
3 Chemo – Toxic Waste
2 Jaime Reyes ♦ Blue Beetle – High-Tech Hero
2 Mr. Mxyzptlk – Troublesome Trickster

Plot Twists
2 Level 12 Intelligence
4 Straight to the Grave
4 Forced Conscription
4 Cannibal Tech
1 A Proud Zinco Product

Locations
4 Soul World
4 Dr. Fate’s Tower – for some reason this card never auto-cards : (

Equipment
2 Cloak of Nabu – Fate Artifact
2 Amulet of Nabu – Fate Artifact
4 Helm of Nabu – Fate Artifact

This is WonderShot, the deck Michael Brendan took to a top 8 finish at Mega Weekend: LA. It’s a thing of beauty! I really like this deck’s fundamentals and I think we can keep the core mostly intact for BYOS. However, we do lose:

Soul World
Wonder Woman – Ambassador of Peace
The Phantom Stranger – Wandering Hero

But we gain DJL, which is an entire set’s worth of cards! How awesome is that! Right off the bat, Soul World becomes Slaughter Swamp . I realize there are some subtle differences – if you have Bizarro in play, Mxy and Soul World help ensure you can play a seven.

While there is no direct substitute for Wonder Woman, Lex Luthor – Criminal Genius is really good too. The same applies for TPS.

We also gain Scarecrow – Fearmonger along with Gorilla Grodd – Simian Mastermind. There’s also the potential to abuse free characters with Sinister Citadel which seems awfully sweet. Here’s what I’m thinking about playing:

Characters
4 The Riddler – Riddle Me This
3 Chemo – Toxic Waste
2 Jaime Reyes ♦ Blue Beetle – High-Tech Hero
2 Mr. Mxyzptlk – Troublesome Trickster
4 Deadshot – Floyd Lawton
1 Charaxes – Moth Monster
4 Poison Ivy – Intoxicating
3 Lex Luthor – Criminal Genius
1 Black Manta – Underwater Marauder
1 Scarecrow – Fearmonger
1 Mr. Sinister – Visionary Geneticist
1 Deathstroke the Terminator – Killing Machine
1 Gorilla Grodd – Simian Mastermind.
1 Doomsday – Engine of Destruction

Plot Twists
4 Straight to the Grave
4 Forced Conscription
4 Cannibal Tech
2 Advance Recon

Locations
4 Soul World
4 Dr. Fate’s Tower

Equipment
2 Light Armor – Construct
2 Cloak of Nabu – Fate Artifact
2 Amulet of Nabu – Fate Artifact
4 Helm of Nabu – Fate Artifact

I’m a huge fan of Light Armor – Construct as it covers a big weakness of Deadshot decks in brickwall effects, while also giving you something to do with your spare Cannibal Tech and Jaime Reyes after you’ve fated up.

Recon is my new favorite card. I’m not sure if Deadshot is fast enough to stifle TNB’s rush. My gut instinct says no, and that’s why I’ve included Advance Recon in here. Should it prove to be fast enough, I’ll probably cut it for something else instead, maybe Unnatural Selection.

Or should I play a diferent deck with more exhaustion instead? If any of you know if anyone else is going to play a similar deck * cough * Michael Brendan * cough * Please let me know! No sloppy seconds for Mr. Bear!

Peace,

-TDB
